Getting it Sorted in Alloa
06/08/2008, Alloa
A special event took place in Alloa on the 17th April 2008 to help local people with learning difficulties think about ways of taking action around issues of concern in the Alloa community. 30 people attended the event, including 4 local Councillors and Clackmannashire's Provost, plus a representative from Central Scotland Police. The event was organised in partnership between ARK Housing Association, Clackmannanshire Council for Voluntary Services, Clackmannanshire Council's Social Work Department and the People First 'Voices' group. It was also covered in the local press.
The two hour long workshop, entitled 'Get it Sorted' included presentations by key local workers and activists, small group work and also larger group discussion about the issues that were raised by people. Community safety, harassment and anti-social behaviour were felt to be the most pressing concern for many of those who attended. The Provost pledged to support and encourage greater involvement of people with learning disabilities in various local community planning forums, so as to obtain a broad range of views as to how to improve life and services in the local area. Other issues raised included the accessibility of buildings and written information, health services and road safety. Uneven or high pavements were also a cause of concern for people with mobility problems.
The event was very successful, with positive feedback from those who attended. It is anticipated that work will continue in the Alloa area to take forward the ideas and suggestions that were talked about and to help people consider the 'next steps' towards promoting further involvement.
