Scottish Social Housing Charter - Document CoverThe Scottish Social Housing Charter is a “list of outcomes, or results, that landlords should achieve.” 

It is there to make sure that housing associations like ARK improve the quality and value of their service.

The Charter was written by the Scottish Government, Tenants, Landlords, and other people who are interested in Housing and The Charter. 

The Government has agreed to do the things that are written in the Charter. This means that ARK needs to do what it says in the Charter.

What is an outcome?

An outcome is simply a result. It is something you want to happen and that you can plan for.

How Does the Charter Help Me?

  • The Charter tells you what outcomes (or results) you can expect from ARK.undefined
  • The Charter tells ARK to ask you what is important to you.
  • The Charter helps the Scottish Housing Regulator to measure if ARK is providing a good housing service.
  • The charter requires ARK to give you an annual update on how it has performed
  • The Charter will also help the Scottish Government to decide who should get money from the public. Only Associations who get good ratings will get money.

The 2015-2016 Housing Report (PDF, 1.5KB, opens in new window) is ARK’s third Annual Report for tenants about how ARK is doing as a landlord since the Scottish Social Housing Charter was introduced.

 Fiona Ross, ARK's Housing Manager, welcomed the findings of the report:

“Staff had another busy year in 2015-16. ARK’s houses and flats are popular so we have people applying to be on our housing list. We spend time pointing applications, putting them on the Housing List and keeping the list up to date. We continue to try and fill empty properties quickly, make sure that tenants pay their rent and keep to the terms of their tenancy agreement. The services of the Welfare Advisers have helped tenants to claim benefits that they are due to get and to keep rent arrears down. The Maintenance team make sure that the properties stay in good condition. This report will give you more information about all of these areas and shows that overall ARK is performing better than last year.”

Further Information

The Charter is a result of the Housing (Scotland) Act 2010 which also introduced an independent Scottish Housing Regulator to look after the interests of tenants and others who use the services of social landlords like ARK.

It was approved by the Scottish Parliament on 14 March 2012 and came into effect from 1 April 2012.
